Calm Before the Storm @SundanceFest

So this is what Park City looks like right now. It’s been snowing and windy, but today it looks peaceful. Sidewalks cleared of snow. Volunteers roaming the streets preparing for the real storm ahead. It’s called the Sundance Film Festival.

In one more day, this:

Will become this:

An evening at the Sundance Film Festival in Full Swing

Run almost entirely by hundreds and hundreds of volunteers, the festival has been growing the last 4 years. The mood has shifted each one of those years for various reasons. But, it’s still an incredibly fun and well done festival that I can’t help but go.

The Sundance Film Festival has the unusually good fortune of providing the festival-goer with a personal experience; allowing you to get close and connect to film crew, directors, actors. You’ll be exposed to new technologies and art forms you’ve never seen before – and in some cases you may never see again. Not because they suck, but because they are unique, one-of-a-kind experiences the artists chose to share at Sundance.

With any good storm, you’ve got your forecasters and your weather guides to help you navigate the turbulent events. In the case of the festival, your guides are your volunteers and they will all be wearing the same gear. The color of their gear and their uniform jackets change from year to year, but they’re not hard to spot and THEY ARE EVERYWHERE. If you need help of ANY kind, walk up to one of them and ask. They’re trained, knowledgeable, and I’ve never run into one in a bad mood.

Sundance Film Festival is funny, fries your brain, challenges what you think you know or believe, and is never short on bold style, crazy fashion choices, and colorful people!

Robert Redford’s commitment to staying the course and providing a venue where a unique voice can jump off of the page and onto the screen is endless. He’s witty, thoughtful, and smart. And for filmmakers and festival-goers alike, he’s considered an open-thinker, adventurer, and ground-breaker when it comes to promoting arts and artists alike with his ongoing @SundanceOrg workshops. The opportunities are endless.

Fashion Gone Wild, No Really!

A lot of changes on the strip this year means people trying new ways to express themselves. New edgy shops, fun shops, and downright trendy shops. Take a look at some of the new appearances at the Sundance Film Festival!

Fur was predominant in many shops. Though the latest looks were mostly fun and sometimes beautiful to look at, I was disturbed by the increase in the use of real fur from many different kinds of animals (rabbit, beaver, alpaca, cow, and others), not to mention the fact that it was talked about so nonchalantly.

The fake fur pulls off the same effect and can be used in fun ways.

The gentleman in the “Sully” jacket as I liked to call it asked me if he had to look up after I asked permission. When I told him I didn’t want him to, I didn’t quite get the reaction I was hoping for!

Accessories are not only hand made locally, but can be equally gorgeous! A furry backpack might normally provoke a wtf, but here at Sundance, it could project a let loose playfulness and come off as confidence.

Incidentally, keep an eye out for my fave volunteer from last year with the furry boots and the giant Elvis sunglasses!!

Sundance 2015 Fashion

Sundance Fashion

#Sundance2015 is kind of cool when it comes to fashion.  You see it all.  From the director that wears the latest European leather jacket to the snowboarder who wants to tear up the pipe during the day and yet, be fashionable and warm in the evening.

Tops. And bottoms. It can be blingy. It can be furry (only fake of course!) Except for the Alpaca sweaters.

Even the volunteers have a sense of fashion – strange, but some kind of sense!  And if the athletes get hurt, there’s no shame in having some game!  Even the pups need to look good. In this case, perhaps form does meet function.

Meet #DaBombPom, the pup with the pups!  Sundance even looks out for their youngest future filmmakers!

The Prep – Part I

There’s a lot of prep to do before going to a film festival.  It’s not like any other vacation.  Like grandpa once said…

The Lost Boys, Sundance Film Festival

My first foray into the Sundance Film Festival wasn’t bad because I’m pretty good at feeling my way around in the dark.  You go in knowing there will be a lot to do, but don’t realize exactly how much there is to do at a film festival this size.

Sundance Film Festival spreads out across several cities, the majority of it exists in Park City and a couple of surrounding suburbs though.  Park City is actually converted for the week – meaning that some businesses give up their spots to sponsors and media for the length of the festival.  It is only at the end of the festival when they start putting all of their inventory and furniture back in place that you realize it used to be a restaurant or a retail store.  It’s quite a phenomenon.  One that some residents don’t like because of the side effects of tourism that it brings into the area and some see as a Godsend because of the influx of revenues it brings to the area.

There are certain things that I’ve learned are important when you go to Sundance.  Things you think you planned for.  Like staying warm.  Don’t under-estimate the importance of undergarments and layering.  Yes, we saw a girl in a mini-skirt and high heels with a sheer, short-sleeved blouse standing next to her fully-clothed and jacketed boyfriend at one of the bus stops.  Andre Agassi said ‘image is everything’.  What do I know?  If someone wants to see my legs, they can jump in the hot tub with me!

Sundance Film Festival, Snow Shoes

When they say snow shoes, this is not what they’re referring to!

When I’m out on the streets of Park City, I’m wearing thermal pants underneath my jeans, a long sleeved shirt underneath a well-lined jacket, and always bring head gear!  They do keep the theaters warm so you can peel off the layers when you get inside.

Even if you’re only rolling in for a few days, this is no time to skimp on the suitcases. Bring what you need.  There’s nothing worse than coming up short(s). Besides, rolling in with a lot of them just makes you look like a player!

If you forget something or feel like you’re just not meeting festival fashion standards, don’t worry.  Park City has a lot of apparel shops and they’re actually pretty nice.  They carry cutting edge fashions and then some.

Oh, it’s real.

Yes, that just happened.  Don’t worry ladies.  They have faux fur brassieres and bikini bottoms for you too!
